In 2009 we had more entries than ever before and would like to extend our warmest thanks to all entrants for making it such an interesting competition. Shortlisted Entries 2009

Junior Writing Competition: 227 young people submitted a poem or a story on the theme of 'The Secret'. They could enter according to their age group and a shortlist was drawn up for each category. From these lists the judges will choose the winner and runner up in each category.
Secondary (age 16 and under): Story: 17 entries

Open Writing Competition: 109 entries were received for the Open Competition where authors were invited to submit a story or poem on the theme of 'Journey'. From these entries shortlists have been chosen for submission to the judges.

2009 Competition Judges

 
Dennis Hamley (Short Stories, Junior Competition) has been writing for children and young adults for nearly 40 years. Among his published books are Hare's Choice, The War and Freddy and Death Penalty, a murder mystery set in a football club. His Divided Loyalties has been shortlisted for the Calderdale Book of the Year Award.

Brian Levison (Poetry, Junior Competition) is a prize-winning poet who writes for adults and children. Recent books include Strange Smells of a Cat and Adding an A. His children's poems appear in anthologies by Macmillan Education, Nelson and OUP. He has taught creative writing and his poetry has been broadcast by the BBC.

Angela Burdick (Short Stories, Open Competition) is a fiction writer and journalist. She has been a book reviewer for the Irish Times and feature writer for the Oxford Times. The author of Look! I Can Cook! and A Place of Safety, she is currently working on another novel.

Merryn Williams (Poetry, Open Competition) is a poet, novelist and critic. Published collections of her poetry include The First Wife's Tale and The Latin Master's Story. She is editor of The Interpreter's House magazine and the newsletter of the Wilfred Owen Association. She is working on a biography of Ruskin's wife.
